Tales and Tastings of Scotland

What does it take to create an authentic tasting event in Scotland? It’s hard to think of a better setting to deliver an informal tasting journey, exploring the fascinating story of Scotland’s iconic cuisine, than in a castle-like historic house dating back to the 15th Century.

Luckily for me the beautiful Pitfirrane House; home of the Halkett family in Dunfermline, was the location chosen by the Rotary Club of West Fife for their recent social gathering. It is certainly the most spectacular golf clubhouse in which I have had the pleasure of delivering a Scottish food tasting event.

With exceptional medieval woodwork, Flemish stained glass and ornate plaster ceiling in the dining room, the scene was set for a delicious evening of artisan food tasting and tales of the food heritage variety; dating further back than the Picts to the present.

As Rotary Club members connect weekly the world over to meet new people and get involved in their communities; working as leaders for positive change, it seemed fitting that the event conveyed both the social, political and economic aspect of Scotland’s cuisine history along with an enlightening of the many artisan food producers throughout Scotland who work today in many small, community settings to keep the heritage of their chosen product alive.

Whether you choose a food tour in Scotland for a day or a week, travelling the length or breadth of the country or at a Scottish food tasting event I want you to sample the premium quality food that dreams, are quite literally made of.

Many of the passionate food and drink artisans we introduce you to, either in person or through their food and drink, have swapped stressful corporate careers to tend goats and make cheese; to blend the traditional preservation process of food smoking with typical peasant fayre of old to create an exceptional and innovative smoked mussel; and so the list does blissfully go on.

At last night’s 7-stage tasting menu event, with fish, seafood, haggis, beef and more we all agreed that we are indeed truly blessed to live in a country where we can truly celebrate the rich history and legendary culture of Scotland, one beautiful mouthful at a time.
