Scottish Food Memories: Get involved

Do you have a food memory of living in Scotland that instantly transports you back to a precious time in your life? If so, there’s a place to share it and be entered into a prize draw to win dinner, bed and breakfast at The Three Chimneys on the Isle of Skye.

Yesterday, we were delighted to join Scottish Chef, owner of the renowned restaurant, The Three Chimneys, Shirley Spear, other food enthusiasts and the team from VisitScotland, our national tourism organisation, at the launch of an appeal to highlight the places and people behind Scotland’s favourite family meals and the recipes handed-down through the generations.

The nationwide appeal was launched at one of our favourite Glasgow institutions, the Willow Tearoom, a place we feature on our  afternoon ‘Time for a Toast’ walking tour of the city. A one-off recipe book entitled ‘You’ll have had yer tea? – Treasured Tastes of Scotland’, will be compiled later this year as a lasting legacy to the ‘Year of Food & Drink 2015’.

The book will help shine a light on the personal stories behind family recipes and inspire local readers to revive some great home-cooking. Many of our international friends may have Scottish roots and remember visiting their Granny in Scotland and can recall the smell of a peat fire roaring in the front room as a pot of soup bubbles away on the kitchen stove.

Delicious bowl of Soup

For those who haven’t yet visited Scotland, the book will allow you the chance to take part in a literary culinary journey from the shores of Shetland all the way down to the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, where a diverse range of local and regional produce and dishes can be discovered. Our Platinum bespoke culinary day tours, short breaks and vacations are all about helping you create actual taste memories of your own by sampling the world-respected produce and traditional fayre of Scotland at a time of your choice. We are sure that many of the memories shared in this book will be of the food and dishes we are always delighted to showcase in our tours; those with the authentic taste of Scotland (and washed down with a dram of Whisky or a wine with a Scottish Connection, of course).

Why not get involved? Recipes must be submitted along with a treasured story about the place or circumstances behind the story. Each entry will be entered into a prize draw to win a one-night stay for two at the Three Chimneys and The House Over-by in Skye, with dinner at the Kitchen Table at the award-winning restaurant.

To submit your Treasured Taste email [email protected] or post to VisitScotland, 94 Ocean Drive, Edinburgh, Scotland. EH6 6JH.

Now where’s Granny’s old recipe book.
